A surveillance camera in the Turkish province of Gümüşhane captured breathtaking images of a fireball – a particularly bright meteorite – on Saturday night. As the celestial body entered the atmosphere, it colored the night sky over Anatolia greenish.
The meteorite turned night into day around 8 p.m. local time, the Turkish news agency IHA reports on its website. He was recorded by a dash cam in the village of Dörtkonak, it is said. The event was admired by numerous eyewitnesses.
Cosmic celestial bodies with potential for danger
Meteorites come in many different sizes. The cosmic rock is mostly made up of various minerals, iron and nickel, most of which, however, burn up when they enter the Earth’s atmosphere. When the rock bodies enter the Earth’s atmosphere, they produce a luminous phenomenon known as a meteor.
The meteorite either burns up completely as a shooting star on its way to Earth, or it actually reaches the ground. Depending on their size, they can cause significant damage.
The largest meteorite-related disaster in recent history occurred around the city of Chelyabinsk in Russia’s Urals in 2013. The blast wave from the explosion of the approximately 12,000-ton rock as it entered the atmosphere not only caused significant property damage. About 1,500 people were also injured, most from broken window glass.
