Landslides, floods – Taiwan: Typhoon “Haikui” claims dozens of injuries

Shortly after Typhoon Saola made landfall in southern China, Typhoon Haikui made landfall in Taiwan. 78 people were injured by falling trees and traffic accidents, including many car and scooter riders. Power was lost in approximately 226,000 households. 8,000 people had to be brought to safety.

Just over 1900 people were housed in public facilities.

Gusts of wind up to 190 kilometers per hour
In the east and south of the country, trees fell over due to the strong wind. On Sunday, the wind gusts reached speeds of up to 190 kilometers per hour. There were local landslides and flooding.

According to the emergency center, ‘Haikui’ passed through the south of the country on Monday morning (local time) and crossed the sea via the Taiwan Strait to southern China.

Taiwan’s Interior Minister Lin Yu-Chang called on the population to remain extremely vigilant as heavy rains in recent days could lead to flooding in some mountainous areas. The typhoon warning is not expected to be lifted until Tuesday.
