Given the high energy costs, the British government now also wants to freeze electricity and gas prices for companies. The price ceiling must apply from October for at least six months, the Ministry of Economic Affairs announced on Wednesday. The government had previously decided to freeze energy prices for private individuals.
Electricity for companies should then cost 211 pounds (241.43 euros) per megawatt hour, gas 75 pounds (85.65 euros). That is less than half of the currently expected price, according to the ministry. This price cap should also apply to public institutions such as schools, churches, hospitals and charities.
Price limit higher than current limit
The government had previously announced a freeze on energy prices for private individuals. An average household will pay £2,500 (€2,855) in the future for electricity and gas. However, that is significantly more than the 1971 pounds (2250.88 euros) that are currently being approved.
There are also plans to strengthen the regional energy supply in order to be able to offer consumers a better offer. After three months, it must be determined whether the measures can be changed or terminated. “We are intervening to stop corporate collapse, protect jobs and limit inflation,” Finance Minister Kwasi Kwarteng said.
Approval for the measures has already come from the BBC Chambers of Commerce Association. However, the government should give preferential treatment to companies that may run into difficulties despite the aid.
