“If Europe holds out this winter, it could rumble in Russia’s interior.” That is what Russia and Ukraine expert Martin Sajdik judged to “Krone” foreign policy editor Kurt Seinitz. In an interview he explains the roots and backgrounds of the Russian war in Ukraine: Now it’s about the attitude of Europe and Austria.
„krone“: The war has become a de facto proxy war between the US and Russia. There is no longer any superior authority over these two that could stop the war, as Henry Kissinger did in 1973 in the Middle East. Is it not to be feared that the war will continue on automatic pilot, as it were?
Martin Saidik: Don’t forget the European factor! If the Kremlin manages to break through European solidarity next winter, then that is correct. Putin hopes that the mood will change and that Europe will come out of the solidarity front. But if European solidarity survives this winter, the Kremlin has committed a huge blunder.
