Spectacular scenes in Villach: After two unknown perpetrators broke open the door of the jewelers and precious metal specialist Leeb and Lechanz in Nikolaigasse, the alarm system went off. Before the perpetrators fled, they seized pearls, jewelry and watches. “Besides pearls and jewelry, they mainly aimed for Breitling, Omega, Tag Heuer and Edox watches, but Rolex stayed behind,” says owner Christof Lechanz.
Witnesses followed
“A witness heard the alarm and saw the two perpetrators flee, each with a plastic bag and an iron bar in their hands. Together with another passer-by, the person then gave chase to the burglars, and the burglars threw some of the loot away when they fled!” Villach police reported.Although the witnesses lost track of the perpetrators a short time later, the alarmed officials took over, triggering an alarm search.
Perpetrator jumped into Drau?
While police helicopters, dogs and all police officers from the city of Villach, as well as some from the district of Villach-Land were on the trail of the perpetrators, one of the two even jumped into the Drau. The search ended around 5:20 a.m. – in vain. The perpetrators are still on the run. “But there has never been any danger to the valuables that customers have stored with us,” Leschanz assures.
