The situation in Burgenland is dramatic: every day people smugglers and illegal migrants are arrested at the borders by the police and army. Not a safe job as both the smugglers and the people being smuggled attack the law enforcement officers, sometimes brutally. The result of this massive rush to the borders: insecurity (especially among women) and popular anger at politics. “Poland protects its border with barbed wire and police with batons and tear gas, while here everything is wide open,” said a frustrated citizen of Deutschkreutz.
