Frozen to death on the Glockner – the icy cold became a death trap for Flachgauerin

Double-digit temperatures below zero and hurricane-like storms dominated the Austrian mountains last weekend. As a result, several alpinists ended their tour on the Großglockner early on Saturday. No mountaineering couple from Salzburg. For a 33-year-old woman from Flachgau, the climb to the 3,798 meter high mountain ended fatally on Sunday evening, the “Krone” reported.

Even the nighttime cold didn’t stop the couple
The woman from Flachgau started on Saturday around 6:45 a.m. with her partner, a 36-year-old from Tennengau, from the Lucknerhaus in Kals. The two were traveling with touring skis and splitboards. It took hours too long before they reached the start in Stüdlgrat. The couple moved on anyway, went into the night and never returned. The partner was considered experienced and well versed in mountain sports.

Research against life partners
As the de facto leader of the tour, the man will likely face legal consequences. The so-called guarantor position, the possible liability of the experienced person for his companions in the worst case, could apply. Investigations are underway into failure to render assistance and negligent homicide. The Tyrolean executive’s final report is currently still under consideration. However, the Tennengauer will probably have to expect investigations by the Public Prosecution Service.

There were harsh conditions on the Glockner that day, comparable to the extremes on Mount Everest. Temperatures above -30 degrees, exacerbated by the so-called wind chill, were also fatal for the young woman late at night. The Tyrolean police have now officially confirmed this. The 33-year-old froze to death just below Austria’s highest mountain.
