North Korea has launched a short-range missile into the Sea of Japan, the South Korean military announced two days after a US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier arrived in the south for exercises.
The launch was detected at 06:53 local time (21:53 GMT on Saturday) and was conducted from Taechon County, in the northwest of the country, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.
According to the Japanese Ministry of Defense, which also detected and is analyzing the launch, the missile fell into the waters of the Sea of Japan (the Baltic Sea on the Korean Peninsula), outside its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
This is Pyongyang’s first ballistic missile launch since June, when it fired eight short-range missiles.
It comes two days after the US aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan and its strike group arrived in the South Korean port city of Busan to participate in joint exercises with South Korea for the first time in five years, in a clear message of strength and drive north.
The military exercises will take place at the end of this month and have been widely criticized by the north, which sees such maneuvers as a threat to its territorial integrity.
This latest shot also comes after several days of reports that Pyongyang is preparing to test a new submarine capable of launching ballistic missiles.
