The fight against illegal migration is putting the police in Burgenland under enormous pressure. More than 50,000 refugees and a total of 216 people smugglers have been arrested so far this year.
The federal army and police on the Burgenland-Hungarian border are faced with a relentless flow of migration from east to west.
situation is serious
“We do Sisyphean work. Hundreds of immigrants are barely registered, which is a time-consuming process, while the next ones are already queuing and waiting. And week after week the challenges are getting bigger,” highly committed officials lament the tense situation behind closed doors.
The criticism is getting louder: “Now everyone has had enough! In the weekends we are already at the limit, the level of resilience is exceeded.” A bitter climax was reached last Saturday: exactly 603 refugees had to be detained and reported according to regulations – more than ever before in 24 hours.
Migrants taken away
Because law enforcement officers in Burgenland could barely keep up with registration, 220 migrants had to be taken to other states for data processing.
A total of 2,842 migrants were discovered and cared for in Burgenland last week – another peak value. For the police, this meant 364 operations in larger seizures along the border with Hungary.
Nearly 220 smugglers caught
So far this year exactly 50,012 migrants have come to Burgenland. In 2021 that was less than 20,000. The fight against illegal migration demands much more from civil servants. In the past week alone, 16 people smugglers have been arrested. Since January, 216 perpetrators have been arrested. In all of 2021 there were 169.
