Like Russian ruler Vladimir Putin before him, his prominent accomplice Dmitry Medvedev has now threatened to use nuclear weapons in the war in Ukraine. On Tuesday, the ex-president published a propaganda message on Instagram, in which he emphasized that Russia has the right to use nuclear weapons to defend itself against “serious aggression by the Ukrainian regime” “if necessary”. Medvedev does not expect a direct NATO intervention in this case.
The use of nuclear weapons applies in “specified cases” and in “strict accordance with the principles of the national nuclear deterrence policy”. Medvedev on Telegram: “Suppose Russia is forced to use the most terrible weapon against the Ukrainian regime, which has committed a serious aggression dangerous for the existence of our state: I believe that even in this case NATO will not directly intervene, would interfere with the conflict.(…) The demagogues across the ocean and in Europe will not die in a nuclear apocalypse.”
Reminder “falling on deaf ears”: “Russia has the right to nuclear attack”
“I must remind you again, for the deaf ears who hear only themselves: Russia has the right to use nuclear weapons if necessary,” wrote Medvedev, vice-chairman of the Russian Security Council. Russia will also do so “in predetermined cases” and in “strict adherence to state policy”. This is “certainly not a bluff”. A few days ago, President Vladimir Putin made a similar statement.
Medvedev had already stated last week that Russia was ready to use all means, including nuclear weapons, to defend annexed areas. Next Tuesday, referendums will end in several Ukrainian districts on the regions’ accession to Russia. The West calls this a farce, partly because the referenda are not free and many opponents of the project have long left the regions.
Connection of Ukrainian territories to Russia on Friday?
According to reports, Putin could declare the areas as Russian territory this week. An advance of the Ukrainian army, supported by Western weapons, could then be labeled by Russia as a direct attack on Russian territory and accused NATO of being a party to the war. Ukraine, meanwhile, wants to recapture the regions that belong to its territory under international law.
US warns of ‘catastrophic consequences’ of nuclear attack
The United States had previously warned Russia of “catastrophic consequences” if nuclear weapons were used. Russia was also warned that the US and its allies would react decisively. The consequences would be “extraordinary” and “real,” US State Department spokesman Ned Price said Monday. That was also made very clear to Moscow. “We didn’t leave the Russians with any doubts,” said Price. The US government means business. Price declined to say exactly what those consequences would be.
