Another year, getxo (Bizkaia) repeats as the second city of the Spanish state where consumers can save less (601 euros) for daily purchases, according to the annual report of the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) on the shopping cart. The Average Savings Possible in the State is 994 euros, 7.3% less than a year ago, as all supermarket chains have increased their prices. In fact, according to the OCU, the shopping cart it has become more expensive by 15.2%the largest increase on record (since 1988).
Amid rising food prices, the OCU has analyzed what it costs to fill the car in 1,180 supermarkets in 65 cities across the state and on the Internet. As admitted by OCU’s Director of Communications and Institutional Relations, Ileana Izverniceanu, at a press conference, this 15.2% increase is “probably deprecated“, as they have found that the trend has continued to rise in these four months, with increases of almost 1%.
It’s not the first time the Biscayan city has been among the most expensive cities to make purchases — in 2021 it was also second, after Las Palmas de Gran Canaria —. In 2022, Getxo was only surpassed by Cartagena (Murcia) as the most expensive city, with a maximum saving of 618 euros. Among the cities or places that allow more savings are Madrid, with savings of up to 3,529 euros, and online branches (2,309 euros of possible savings).
The OCU has analyzed the supermarket chains and has highlighted that they have all increased their prices, with increases of about 10-15%. However, there are establishments that have made their basket even more expensive, including DIA (between 15-17%) and Mercadona (16.1%). BM Urban (Grupo Uvesco) is one of the chains that has increased prices the least, 8.8%, in line with the CPI. The supermarkets of Eroski Center and Cityon the other hand, would be higher than 10%
