At Reintalersee in Kramsach, Tyrol, an employee of animal shelter Wörgl was able to save the swan whose beak was pierced by the metal part. Another member of the swan family had previously been rescued and treated, in this case there was a fishhook in the head.
Good news for all “Krone” readers who were deeply moved by our message in Monday’s edition: because now a dedicated helper was able to catch the swan that should have caught a fishhook in its head (in this case, its beak).
Second case in a short time
It was only recently that the swan father had to be freed from a fishhook stuck between his ear and his eye. Now they looked forward to the young family member. “We knew from witness descriptions where the swan family likes to hang out,” says Sarah Schauer of the animal shelter in Wörgl. She found what she was looking for on the spot. She distracted the swan with food, caught it and brought it to the shore.
Fishermen, be careful!
“Because of the barb, I had to pinch off the metal part with pliers to be able to pull it out of the beak,” says the animal protection association employee. Because the hook had left a “clean” hole, the patient could be discharged immediately. The rest of his family had waited patiently during the procedure.
Of course, the fishermen at the lake aren’t supposed to be intentional, but the draw is nonetheless: if a hook catches a swan and tries to free it, report it!
