Hurricane Ian, now headed for Florida, causes electrical system failure that leaves the entire island without power
Cuba has been left in the dark. Hurricane Ian, category 3 and with wind gusts of up to 200 kilometers per hour, has collapsed the national electricity system. As a result, more than 11 million Cubans are without power, a common situation on the island in recent months, although there had never been a simultaneous general power outage across the country during the current energy crisis.
The state-owned company Unión Eléctrica (UNE) reported in a concise press release that the “National Electric System is in exceptional condition, no electricity production (no electricity supply to the country)”.
“Currently, work is ongoing to reconnect the system, work will continue into the night today, Tuesday and early tomorrow, Wednesday (afternoon in Spain),” said Lázaro Guerra, technical director of the company.
The outage occurred as the hurricane hit Pinar del Río, the country’s westernmost province, causing a widespread power outage. However, the cyclone did not affect the main economic centers of the country. Not even Havana, where, despite everything, chaos has ensued in recent hours with roads closed by falling trees, collapsing buildings and flooding.
The leader of the regime, President Miguel Díaz-Canel, visited the worst-affected western areas and confirmed that all available resources will be made available to help alleviate the emergency. At the moment there is no exact balance of the damage caused by Ian.
The Ministry of Energy and Mining – on which the Electricity Union depends – pointed out that “the error is given in the western, central and eastern connections” and that “its solution requires great precision”.
The cyclone has already left Cuban territory and is now heading for the Florida peninsula (US), where all the alarms have gone off.
