Majority in sight – Finland on the brink of applying for NATO membership

Finland could be on the cusp of an official application to join NATO. According to a newspaper report, the request could be made in the first half of May or even before that. However, the condition is that the project obtains a solid majority in parliament.

According to information from the newspaper “Iltalehti”, the intention of the government under Prime Minister Sanna Marin to join NATO is included in an annex to the supplementary report on the foreign and security policy of the relevant parliamentary committee, which is expected on Maundy Thursday. (April 14).

President Sauli Niinistö expects a parliamentary majority for his country’s application for NATO membership in the near future. As the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” learned in a meeting with Niinistö in Helsinki, the Finnish president also expects a swift decision from NATO on an application, according to a preliminary report.

60 percent of Finns for entry
In recent polls by the public broadcaster YLE, more than 60 percent of the Finns polled were in favor of joining.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and other senior politicians of the North Atlantic military alliance have repeatedly emphasized in the past that the door for Finland and Sweden to join is always wide open.
