It should have been a science festival with spectacular experiments for young and old. But an event in northeastern Spain ended Friday night with 18 people, some seriously injured.
During a demonstration as part of the festival organized by the University of Girona (UdG), a liquid nitrogen tank exploded in front of an audience of 200 to 300 people (see videos below). Those affected did not sustain burns. However, according to Spanish media, the majority were injured by parts of the exploded metal bus.
A five-year-old would have suffered the worst injuries. The girl is now being treated in Girona hospital along with four other seriously injured: two children aged ten and twelve, a 47-year-old and a 31-year-old man. The other 13 injured were released from hospital between Friday evening and Saturday.
Organizer: “Accident incomprehensible”
UdG spokesman Salvador Martí assured that the experiment with the liquid nitrogen had often been carried out without any problems. It was “incomprehensible” why the accident happened this time. The Catalan police will launch an investigation, Martí said.
