The tense situation with raw materials is extending to the sparkling wine industry. Other than glass bottles, closures are hard to find in the global market.
Even when the vines in the vineyards are just starting to sprout, the drink producers are already very concerned. “Our industry has been hit hard by the lack of packaging,” confirms Norbert Szigeti, deputy state guild master in the Burgenland food industry.
“Delivery issues are to be expected for everything from aluminum capsules to cardboard boxes,” the expert warns. The industry is looking for alternative closures and ecological solutions.
Supply of sparkling wine assured
“There has already been discussion in Germany about offering sparkling wine topless, i.e. without aluminum capsules about the closure, but that is not allowed under EU law for the time being,” says Szigeti. He can reassure you: “You don’t have to worry about the supply of sparkling wine or other drinks.”
