On Monday afternoon, an injured collared pigeon was taken from the city of Salzburg to animal shelter Pfotenhilfe in the border area of Upper Austria/Salzburg. It’s actually a routine process, as the wildlife station there takes in hundreds of injured and orphaned wild animals every year, cares for them, and releases them back into the wild.
But in addition to a serious wing injury, the pigeon also had a large round hole in the chest, which was immediately recognized as a bullet hole, after which the animal was immediately taken to the veterinary clinic. That same evening came the sad news, including photos, that the pigeon had such serious gunshot wounds that it could only be saved. The X-ray even clearly shows an air pressure pattern.
“Unfortunately, there are annoying animal abusers in the city of Salzburg that urgently need to be stopped,” says Pfotenhilfe boss Johanna Stadler, shocked. “After several mutilated ducks, a crow with torn feathers and at least one other pigeon being shot, this pigeon has now been discovered in the Nonntal district near the Alpenstraße. We will report again. We are very grateful for any information about the perpetrator, who up to two years in prison.”
