In their reports, German and Polish scientists have confirmed the claim that a poisonous algae caused the fish deaths in the Oder.
In the summer several hundred tons of fish died in the Oder and for weeks the authorities and 49 scientists from 14 research institutes were in the dark about the reasons. Studies now show that introduced salt led to the massive spread of the brackish water alga Prymnesium parvum.
In turn, it produced toxic substances, resulting in the mass death of fish and other organisms. A study by Greenpeace provides clarity: In the Gliwice region in Poland and in a copper mine near the town of Glogów, for example, salt concentrations were measured that are many times higher than the permissible values in fresh water.
