Road is closed – crushed stone on the Loibl: the driver was able to avoid it

Date:

On Monday morning shortly before 2 a.m., a stone chipped away at the entire carriageway of the Loiblpass national road near Ferlach (Carinthia). A driver was nearly hit by the boulders.

2 a.m., on the Loiblpass state road: A 42-year-old from Klagenfurt was driving his car near Sabotnica at the exit of the Tscheppa gorge. Suddenly rocks fell on the road and the driver feared for his life. “He just managed to steer past the falling boulders,” police said. “Although the car was badly damaged, he himself was completely unharmed.”

The Loiblpass national road is currently closed to traffic. State geologist Franz Goldschmidt checked in the morning whether there was still danger or whether the road could be reopened. “The lumps on the street will probably be cleared up quickly,” explains Goldschmidt.

“But clearing the rock face and rock channel will probably take all day because the team has to work with the rope from top to bottom.” The road is likely to remain closed all day – the Tscheppa gorge will also be affected as the bus will not be able to drive to the exit.
