Accident on Dachstein: mountaineer slides over a crevasse

Date:

The emergency services were busy on Saturday with two alpine operations: On Dachstein, a 58-year-old from Salzburg slid a hundred meters down the glacier and over a crevasse. And on the Gosaukamm, a Singapore woman and her Indian companion had to be rescued from a via ferrata.

On Saturday, a 58-year-old from Salzburg went on a mountain tour to the Dachstein Glacier, which he started around 5 a.m. at the Vorderer Gosausee via the Adamekhütte. At the beginning of the glacier, he went to an altitude of about 2,600 meters and used the rock contours and stony passages on the glacial ice without proper equipment. Near a small depression in the ice he decided to put on the crampons. He suddenly slid 100 meters down the sloping glacial ice into the valley and over a crevasse.

Relaxed in a meltwater canal
The mountaineer came to rest in a meltwater channel in the ice about waist-width wide and made a distress call under his own power. An Alpine police officer and two mountain rescuers were flown to the glacier by a police helicopter. The pilot was able to land near a crevasse, allowing rescuers to quickly reach the injured man. He was already severely hypothermic and apparently injured. Therefore, he was rescued with rope and flown to the Adamek hut. The injured mountaineer was taken over by the emergency medical helicopter “Christophorus 10” and received medical care.

Holiday couple failed on via ferrata
On Saturday there was another mission on the Großer Donnerkogel. A couple, a 33-year-old woman from Singapore and a 36-year-old acquaintance from India, both living in Manchester, wanted to climb the Intersport via ferrata on the Großer Donnerkogel on Saturday. The two holidaymakers organized their equipment and took the Gosaukamm cable car to the Alpine region around 8:15 am. After a 20-minute climb they reached the start of the via ferrata, which has a difficulty level of C/D. After about half an hour, the two reached first place C with difficulty.

Fell into a via ferrata set
The woman had strength problems in the vertical climbing section and fell into the via ferrata, which did not resolve, leaving the woman unharmed. After this incident they took a break for about an hour. Then they decided to move on. After a short time, the woman admitted that she was not up to the challenge as it was her first via ferrata.

Rescued by helicopter
Due to the state of exhaustion, the companion called the emergency number. An alpine police officer and mountain rescuers organized the rescue of the uninjured. The crew of the Salzburg police helicopter was able to rescue the exhausted woman and her companion from the via ferrata near Fixtau and drop them off at the Zwieselalm, where they were brought safely into the valley by other emergency services.
