Test all over Austria – Here you get the best kebab in the country

Date:

Austria’s best kebab? Sure, that’s a matter of taste. And yet there are clear differences, at least in terms of quality, service, choice and cleanliness. The “Krone” editors Peter Wiesmeyer and Harald Dworak tasted their way through the Austrian kebab scene and passed the strict quality control in all provincial capitals.

The kebab has been part of Austrian gastronomy since the mid-1990s. A few years earlier, the fast food dish from Turkey, its country of origin, made the leap to Germany. Since then, our northern neighbors have been hopelessly addicted to the delicious mountain of meat wrapped in bread. About 3.1 million kebabs are eaten in Germany every day.

billion business
In 2021 alone, the kebab trade in Europe washed around twelve billion euros into the cash registers of the snack bars, 400 tons of doner kebab meat is usually produced industrially and put into bread. Together with lettuce, onion and an often spicy sauce, the kebap is ready to eat.

A total of 3,268 snack bars (kebap, pizza, sausage stands, etc.) are registered in Austria. Kebaps are available in 230 places in Vienna alone. A 2019 survey showed that 2.8 percent of Viennese already see a kebab as a typical Viennese meal.

The belly filled
Incidentally, the world record eating kebab is in the name of Mehmet Aslan from the Southeastern Anatolian city of Sanliurta. He filled his stomach with 52 pieces. The “Krone” testers didn’t manage to find that many kebabs when looking for Austria’s best kebab. Twelve different stores in all nine state capitals competed against each other in the test.
