New structures? – The Palestinian Prime Minister resigns

Date:

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh resigns. The head of government said on Monday that he had handed over his resignation to President Mahmoud Abbas. The reason for this is the recent developments in the region, including the war.

The resignation came at the request of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Shtayyeh said on Monday. Governments of Arab countries and the US had exerted similar pressure. The White House calls for a reformed Palestinian Authority.

The politician said that with his withdrawal he wanted to make it easier for the population to reach agreement on political agreements after the war. However, it said the move should be viewed more symbolically. Shtayyeh is considered a loyal employee of Abbas and will continue to lead a provisional government. Forming a new government could take weeks or months.

Fatah is a rival of Hamas
The 66-year-old has been Prime Minister of the Palestinian Autonomous Territories since 2019. He is an economist and belongs to the Fatah party, the movement for the national liberation of Palestine. Its objectives include the establishment of an independent democratic state with full sovereignty and the eradication of the nationalist ideology of Zionism.

Fatah is the faction that holds the most weight in the Palestinian Authority (PA), which controls parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Hamas is not a member of the PA and is a rival of Fatah. The Israeli government does not want Hamas or a Fatah-led PA as a government in the coastal strip in the future.
