After about 160 tons of Ukrainian grain was destroyed at a Polish train station, the government in Kiev is calling for punishment for those responsible. And with drastic words.
“Those who damaged Ukrainian grain must be found, neutralized and punished,” Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olexandr Kubrakov wrote on the online short message service X on Monday.
The grain masses were destroyed as part of protests by Polish farmers that had been going on for weeks against falling incomes and cheap imports from countries such as Ukraine. It was not the first incident of this kind: Ukrainian agricultural products have repeatedly been deliberately dumped from freight wagons.
Farmers fear loss of income
Agricultural goods are one of Ukraine’s main sources of income. Due to Russia’s war of aggression, the country is increasingly trying to export its products overland instead of via the disputed Black Sea. Farmers in Poland, but also in many other European countries, are seeing their income disappear as a result.
Because of this, but also because of other points such as EU environmental regulations, there have been repeated farmer protests for months. Border crossings and roads are often blocked by tractors. Since Sunday, Polish farmers have been blocking the highway to Germany near Frankfurt (Oder). In view of the protests, a meeting of the European Union’s agriculture ministers is planned for next Monday in Brussels.
