The 2022 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology goes to Swedish physician and biologist Svante Pääbo for his research in the field of human evolution. This was announced by the Nobel Prize Committee in Stockholm on Monday.
Svante Pääbo received the prize “for his discoveries about the genome of extinct hominids and human evolution”. All species of the genus Homo and their human ancestors are grouped as hominids – ie the humans alive today and their (all extinct) ancestors, but not the common ancestors of chimpanzees and humans.
Pääbo is director and scientific member of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig. Among other things, the paleogenetician was the first researcher to sequence the Neanderthal genome.
The prize is endowed with almost 918,000 euros
Last year, American researcher David Julius and Lebanon-born molecular biologist Ardem Patapoutian were honored. They were awarded for their discoveries of the human receptors for temperature and touch sensitivity. The prize money this year is ten million Swedish kronor (almost 918,000 euros) per category.
Follow Physics and Chemistry Prizes
The winners for physics will be announced on Tuesday and those for chemistry on Wednesday. After the science prizes, the Nobel Prize in Literature will be awarded as usual on Thursday and the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday. The conclusion next Monday is the prize for economics – the only one that was not included in the will of the Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel.
It is planned that the prizes will be presented again this year in Stockholm on December 10, the anniversary of the death of founder Alfred Nobel. The winners are also invited from the years 2020 and 2021. In these two years, the award ceremony took place in the home countries of the prize winners because of Corona.
