The Russian State Duma or Chamber of Deputies this Monday unanimously passed the annexation to Russia of the Ukrainian territories of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhya, partly occupied by Russian troops and after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared last week that they were already part of Russian territory.

The regions in question will become republics — in the case of Donetsk and Lugansk — and regions — in the case of Kherson and Zaporizhzhya — all with government leaders who will be given governor status.
