A report in the Italian daily “La Repubblica” caused a stir among NATO countries and their allies. Accordingly, the nuclear submarine “Belgorod” left a port in the north of Russia to test the weapons system “Poseidon”. “Poseidon” would cause massive tsunamis, endangering entire coastal areas. After leaving the nuclear submarine “disappeared” – not surprising, because the “Belgorod” has the most modern camouflage devices. NATO itself is silent about this.
The submarine is said to be equipped with a new kind of “doomsday weapon”. According to the report, it would have been used to test the Poseidon weapons system in the Arctic Ocean. This should be able to trigger radioactive tsunamis hundreds of meters high, which would wipe out coastal areas. By comparison, the 2004 tsunami in South Asia, which killed more than 200,000 people, had waves reaching a maximum height of 35 meters.
Devastating tsunamis possible
According to a report by US broadcaster Fox News, the system consists of an atomic bomb-equipped submarine drone that is fired towards a coastal town. The bomb is then detonated undetected about 1,000 meters under the sea to trigger the devastating tsunami. The system should not be operational until 2027. The submarine itself did not enter service until July.
Military expert Rebekah Koffler told Fox News that Russian President Vladimir Putin would only use such a weapon as a “last resort” when Russia and the US are already “engaged in a direct war and Russia is losing”.
Russian submarines with modern camouflage capabilities
The disappearance of the “Belgorod” is not a surprise, since Russian submarines have the best camouflage options. In the past, they have repeatedly managed to penetrate U.S. waters undetected. Sometimes they would have operated undetected near the American coast for weeks. According to Koffler, in 2010, a submarine was not spotted until after it left U.S. waters.
Russian ruler Putin recently raised the bar in the Ukraine war after his army suffered major setbacks on the battlefield. Last week, after organizing “referendums”, he had the four Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhya and Kherson annexed. In this regard, he also ordered a partial mobilization and announced his intention to defend the appropriated areas with all available means, including nuclear weapons. However, it wasn’t until the weekend that he had the strategically important city of Lyman in the Donetsk region evacuated, which he believed was giving up Russian territory after thousands of Russian soldiers were surrounded by the defenders there.
