Nobel Prize Committee disrupts Zeilinger at work

Date:

Austrian quantum physicist Anton Zeilinger, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics on Tuesday, was working on a publication when the Nobel Prize Committee called at 11 a.m. His secretary put him through and said it was someone who wouldn’t say who he was, but she recognized the number was from Sweden. Since then, Zeilinger hasn’t even found time to toast with his wife. The phone also continues to ring. The award is a “great recognition”.

In the afternoon, Zeilinger, along with his colleagues from the faculty of the University of Vienna and the Institute for Quantum Information and Quantum Optics (IQOQI), will toast the awarding of the Nobel Prize and address the press.

He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Vienna and still has a research group at the IQOQI.

Honor is “perfectly logical”
For Zeilinger it is “completely logical” that he should receive the Nobel Prize along with his colleagues John Clauser and Alain Aspect. He refers to the Wolf Prize the three physicists received in 2010 for their work on quantum physical entanglement, which today are “the fundamental cornerstones for many modern quantum information technologies under intense research worldwide,” as it was called at the time.

“Encouragement for young people”
Zeilinger also sees the award as “encouraging young people” and advises them, “Don’t think too much about future job applications.” Without the many employees it would not have been possible to walk the way to the application. What will be seen in the next 20 years, both in the fundamentals of quantum physics and in the realm of applications, is “absolutely open,” said Zeilinger, who will be collaborating on Dec. 10, the birthday of founder Alfred Nobel. with Aspect and Clauser in Stockholm will receive the award.
