Will demos continue – climate activist Krumpeck started jail time

Date:

According to the organization, Martha Krumpeck, co-founder of the “Last Generation” in Austria, has been in custody in Vienna since Wednesday morning. The 31-year-old has therefore started a replacement prison sentence imposed on her for repeated traffic blocks. She will be jailed for a total of 44 days. Krumpeck, along with other environmentalists, had stuck on busy roads several times in recent times.

“I’m not afraid to go to jail. It’s still a shame that people in Austria would rather be locked up than take care of maintaining our livelihoods. Right now, in the climate and energy crisis, sensible saving measures are needed – 100 km /h on the highway costs nothing, saves hundreds of thousands of liters of fuel per year and also provides less noise, better air and more road safety.A first step in the right direction, which must be followed by further steps,” says Krumpeck.

“Only civil resistance remains”
When asked about her plans for the time after her captivity, she replies: “After my release I will take to the streets again because I cannot watch our children’s future be sacrificed to fossil madness. If this government is not able to simplest, cheapest measures necessary to survive, then civilian resistance is the only option.”

The activists who stick to the street are usually charged with disorder and traffic violations, such as not using the sidewalk as a pedestrian. If the blockage is regarded as a meeting, a notification under the General Meeting is also possible. The fire brigade will carefully free the vehicle from the roadway.
