The energy crisis also affects public transport in the federal capital: as Wiener Linien announced on Wednesday, the temperature in the metros and trams will be lowered by two degrees. Lighting is also limited. Lettering Wiener Linien will be switched off, artworks in the stations will no longer be specially lit in the future. This arrangement was initially established for the autumn and the coming winter.
The temperature is not always regulated evenly in the different vehicles, as there are eleven different types in use, as explained in the case of Wiener Linien. However, in more modern sets, the setting is done electronically, meaning precise adjustment is easier, it said. The target temperature is now at least 18 degrees. Until now it was 20 degrees.
Lighting and ventilation have also been optimized
At the same time, the switch to LED lighting in buildings and vehicles is progressing. Some objects also have timers installed. According to Wiener Linien, the ventilation systems are also being optimised. In addition, gas heating systems are gradually being replaced and the use of geothermal energy is being expanded. The renewal of the bus fleet, which numbers some 400 vehicles, has recently reduced energy consumption by more than a third – although the offer has been expanded by six percent at the same time, as was emphasized.
Due to the savings that are now being made, the transport company assumes an electricity reduction of about eleven gigawatt hours per year. This corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of about 3,000 four-person households.
Wiener Linien utilizes savings potential
“In recent years, we have already implemented numerous measures that enable us to use energy very economically. In the current crisis, it is our responsibility to take a close look at all areas of the company and to exploit its further potential,” said Wiener Linien Managing Director Günter Steinbauer.
“Every day, more than two million passengers make an important contribution to climate protection by traveling quickly, cheaply and energy-efficiently by metro, tram and bus and by using additional forms of mobility such as Wien-Mobil-Rad. With further energy-saving measures, Wiener Linien is once again sending out an important signal for the responsible use of our resources,” said SPÖ municipal councilor Peter Hanke.
