The scene is reminiscent of a horror movie: a bike ride turned into a horror trip for a 32-year-old from Passau after two crows suddenly attacked the cyclist. The woman fell and even had to be treated in the hospital.
Out of the blue, the birds attacked the cyclist on Innstrasse on Sunday morning. When she tried to fend off the crows’ attacks, the 32-year-old fell. She had to be taken to hospital by ambulance, the Passau police reported. Fortunately, the woman escaped relatively lightly with a flesh wound to her knee.
Attack to defend Brood
It is unclear why the crows attacked the cyclist. But attacks like the one in Passau are always possible, especially in spring and summer when the animals reproduce. And not only crows and ravens can be dangerous to humans, but also to birds of prey, as Martin Rümmler of the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (Nabu) explains to the “Bild”: “Usually it is because they want to defend their offspring or young birds.”
Headgear is recommended
So if you are in forest areas where many birds of prey breed, you have to be careful not to get too close to the nests. Wearing a hat is also helpful. In some areas, there are also signs around some nests warning of possible attacks, said Stefanie Bernhardt, spokeswoman for the German state association for bird and nature conservation. Avoiding forests in general is not necessary, as only a few birds behave aggressively.
In case of an attack, it is best to hold up a long stick, an umbrella or something similar. The attacks were usually at the highest point of the body – or at its extension, ie the stick, says Bernhardt.
