The model deleted a video in which she sings the song with a friend, who is punished by Russian justice with 10 days in prison
Russian justice has convicted Miss Crimea 2022, Olga Valeeva, and a friend of hers – whose identity has not been released – for singing a Ukrainian national anthem. Last September, the young women distributed a video on social networks in which they sang a cappella ‘Chervona Kalina’, a song considered by the Russian authorities as the national anthem of Ukrainian nationalists. What is the penalty? A fine of 40,000 rubles (about 680 euros) for Valeeva and ten days in jail for her boyfriend.
The Interior Ministry of Crimea, a peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014, announced yesterday that it “arrested two young people who play the anthem of an extremist organization in a video”, which has already been removed. Shortly afterwards, he also published images of two young women, with hazy faces, apologizing. “I want to apologize for singing the song ‘Chervona Kalina’, the message of which I didn’t know at all,” says one of them, who turns out to be Valeeva. The 34-year-old model also assured on her Instagram account that she sang the song “without symbolic connotations”.
It is not the first time that the Russian authorities have vetoed and sanctioned aid to Kiev. In fact, early last month, a video recorded during a wedding party at a restaurant in Bakhshisrai, in southern Crimea, was released. It showed how the guests sang ‘Chervona Kalina’. The result? Fines and penalties of five to fifteen days in prison, for both the participants and the organizers. Shortly afterwards, the property owner recorded a video apologizing for what had happened and expressing his support for the Russian offensive in Ukraine. Since then, Crimean Governor Sergei Aksionov has promised to launch a criminal investigation against those who sing Ukrainian national anthems.
