Former Russian TV editor Marina Ovsiannikova, known for her criticism of Russia’s war against Ukraine, says she escaped house arrest. That writes the 44-year-old journalist in the news service Telegram.
“I consider myself completely innocent and since our state refuses to abide by its own laws, I refuse to comply with the coercive order of house arrest imposed on me as of September 30, 2022 and I release myself from this,” it read.
Now on a wanted list
According to earlier information, the house arrest was planned until next Sunday. Owsiannikova is now on a wanted list. The arrest is part of a criminal case in which she is accused of spreading alleged misinformation about the Russian armed forces.
The First Channel employee of Russian state television, previously considered loyal on the line, held an anti-war poster in the camera in a news program in mid-March (photo below). “Don’t believe the propaganda, they’re just lying to you here,” it read.
After that, Owsiannikova spent several months abroad and temporarily worked for the German newspaper “Die Welt”. In mid-July they again protested against the war in view of the Kremlin. The Russian authorities, which have been cracking down on government critics for years, have considerably tightened their criminal procedures since the start of the military offensive.
