At the beginning of 2022, two Styrian students had several times announced a raid in Leibnitz. The other youngsters took the matter seriously and called in their parents. The 15 and 16-year-olds had to answer for dangerous threats before the Criminal Court in Graz on Thursday. They confessed to their act and stated that they came up with this idea because of mass bullying. The judge found both guilty, but only gave instructions.
According to their own statements, the two boys were tortured and attacked by the others at their school. “It all sounds terrible, but why didn’t you see a teacher?” asked Judge Andrea Schwinger-Wagner. The two didn’t, but soon rumors of a planned killing spree spread. “At first it was just fun, then we said we’re going to do it,” said the 16-year-old.

The plans became more and more concrete, at least to the outside world, so the duo was already talking about clothing and weapons. The eldest is said to have written to a friend: “I will kill everyone, blow up the school and then kill myself”. There would also have been a list of those who wanted to be spared because they were not bullies. “We wanted to be taken seriously, but we didn’t really want to do it,” emphasized the suspect.
The 15-year-old was in juvenile psychiatry at the time of the murder. He has always found the subject of killings interesting, “all the more so since I was humiliated because of my sexuality,” he said. He repeatedly put himself in the perpetrator’s position “in order not to feel so powerless”. The bullies at school repeatedly threatened him and his friend with violence. Part of the hearing took place behind closed doors.
In her closing speech, the prosecutor emphasized that it was a dangerous threat, even though “the mass bullying may have been terrible”. However, it is questionable in what details the massacre was discussed. “It was not innocent empty talk”, the public prosecutor was convinced. “I’m really sorry for anyone who was really scared,” the 15-year-old emphasized in his closing remarks.
“The whole case is very shocking and verging on execution,” the judge said. She found the two guilty, but did not impose a sentence – during three years’ probation. Instead, there were instructions to undergo psychotherapy and bullying counseling. In addition, there must be a probationary period. The verdict is not final.
