What started with checks in two après-ski bars in Schladming, Styria, has now grown into a real network for fake vaccination certificates. There are now 46 suspects and the investigation is still ongoing. There have been six charges so far.
The night slalom in Schladming made headlines this year not only from a sporting point of view. The day before the race, police said they had discovered several fake vaccination cards for sale during raids on two après-ski bars and private homes. It certifies the owners a corona vaccination without ever getting the sting; we reported.
Originally nine suspects
The anonymous tip came from Salzburg. At the time, there were nine suspects. However, the case has expanded considerably since January, the public prosecutor in Leoben announced at the request of “Krone”: 46 suspects have now been investigated and six people have already been charged. Further details about those affected have not yet been disclosed “for reasons of investigative tactics”.
Driving school employee stood in court
Another sensational case has already landed in court: a 39-year-old employee of a driving school in Leobner is said to have falsified Covid test, antibody and vaccination certificates: with a graphic program on the company PC. The woman told police at the time that she was only doing family members a favor. In any case, she was sentenced – in court – to a conditional prison sentence of several months.
Counterfeiters face up to a year in prison
There were two particularly spectacular cases of false Covid 19 certificates that repeatedly came to light last winter. At that time, the Green Pass still played an important role in our daily lives.
The Graz Public Prosecutor’s Office also had or are pending several proceedings and in some cases there were also charges, as stated on request. For example, a suspect presented false-positive antigen tests to the health department — he wanted a decision to justify his absence from work. Others then changed the date if the test results were negative in order to enter the Austrian border.
These are primarily the offenses of falsifying documents, data or evidence. They all carry a prison sentence of up to one year or a fine.
