Life expectancy pandemic: Austria rather bad

Date:

The processing of the management of the corona pandemic begins. A US study now published in JAMA Online shows the catastrophic impact of Covid-19 on US life expectancy at minus 1.87 years (2019/2020). But compared to 21 rich countries in the world, Austria is worse off with a 0.77 year drop in life expectancy from the average (minus 0.58 years). Life expectancy even increased in New Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan.

Steven Woolf of Virginia Commonwealth University (Medical School) and the co-authors dug up the mortality statistics for the US and 21 rich countries – from Austria to similar countries such as Norway, France, Italy, England and Wales, Switzerland and Germany to Taiwan -. analyzed and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) for the years 2019 and 2020.

The evaluation is also based on gender. This revealed serious differences in the development of average life expectancy in each country. Covid-19 and health care conditions in general, including those directly affected by SARS-CoV-2, apparently played a role.

Life expectancy drop worst in US
The United States was hardest hit of the 22 countries “Between 2019 and 2020, life expectancy fell by an average of 1.87 years (…). The average decline in life expectancy in all 21 countries used for comparison was minus 0.58 years. None of these states showed a decline in life expectancy comparable to that of the United States,” the authors wrote. Life expectancy decreased by an average of 3.7 years among American citizens of Hispanic descent and by 3.22 years among people of African American descent.

However, the study is informative for the remaining 21 countries compared to Austria because of their specific “performance” in the first year of the Covid 19 pandemic. “The results in the peer countries ranged from a 1.43 year decline in Spain to an increase in life expectancy in New Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan. Life expectancy did not change significantly in Denmark, Finland and Norway,” the epidemiologists noted. The life expectancy of men (minus 1.44 years) fell most sharply in Spain (women: minus 1.34 years), followed by England and Wales (minus 1.38 years), where women also experienced a 1-year decrease by 0. 07 years saw.

Men’s life expectancy in Austria has fallen by 0.81 years
According to the study, the decline in average life expectancy in Austria from 2019 to 2020 was minus 0.77 years. (2019: 81.91 years; 2020: 81.14 years). The life expectancy of Austrian women fell by 0.68 years (84.20 and 83.52 years), that of the male population by 0.81 years (79.54 years and 78.73 years). Austria is in any case worse than the average values of the comparator countries (not the US). Life expectancy in these countries fell by 0.58 years for both sexes, by exactly six months for women and by 0.68 years for men. This is a smaller decrease than in Austria.

Life expectancy increased in New Zealand and South Korea
In contrast, in New Zealand, life expectancy increased by 0.64 years between 2019 and 2020. In South Korea, the increase was 0.24 years. In terms of development, Austria is only 13th out of 21 non-US countries compared (after Scotland) and below average for women, and 11th for men (after France) – also below average. Regardless, Covid-19 continued to widen the gap in life expectancy between the United States and other wealthy countries. In 2020 it was only 76.99 years, while the average in the 21 countries compared was 81.50 years. According to their statements, the authors obtained the data from official bodies.
