You don’t see something like this every day: during preparatory work for a flood protection project in the Weinviertel (Lower Austria), experts came across a sharp war relic. “The 25 kilo bomb was probably dropped to support the fight against the Soviet ground forces,” one of the experts suspects.
The discovery of a 250 kg German SC250 mining bomb in Velm-Götzendorf, in the Gänserndorf district, came as a surprise even to the professionals of EOD Munitionsbergung. “These were used in the war against stations, railway embankments or underpasses. But there were no such strategic goals in the region,” says Managing Director Stefan Plainer.
Support against ground forces
Nevertheless, his collaborators Armin Kolbe and Daniel Teleaga discovered the sharp remnant of the war during routine surveys of the land on which the flood protection is built. “The bomb was probably dropped to support the fight against Soviet ground forces,” Plainer suspects.
The duo discovered the explosive, the demining service defused it and took it away. Due to its location, unlike a similar find at Schwechat Airport (“Krone”) reported, there was no sensational evacuation.
