Both apply for asylum in the United States after arriving on Alaska’s San Lorenzo Island in the Bering Strait

The authorities of the island of San Lorenzo (Alaska), in the middle of the Bering Strait, on Wednesday reported the arrival of two foreigners in the municipality of Gambell, in the north of the island. These are two Russian citizens who left Egvekinot on board a boat. A total of more than 400 kilometers (215 nautical miles).

As the protagonists explained, they arrived fleeing the partial mobilization proclaimed by Vladimir Putin and have applied for asylum, according to local people’s testimonies collected by the local press and the Associated Press agency. Gambell is a small community of just 600 people in the north of remote St. Lawrence Island, halfway between Siberia and the Alaskan coast.

“Given the current tensions with Russia, Senator Sullivan called the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and spoke with him and another senior DHS official. Since those calls, Customs and Border Protection has been responding and going through the process of determining the eligibility of these individuals to enter the United States,” said a statement from the office of Republican senator Sullivan. DHS.

This is the latest installment in the efforts of Russian citizens to flee the partial mobilization announced by the President, Vladimir Putin, to strengthen the Ukrainian front. The Kremlin planned to mobilize 300,000 reservists, of whom it has already recruited 200,000. A similar number have already escaped from Russia. Others have opted for more dramatic solutions. A reservist burned to the ground at a bus station and a rapper committed suicide earlier this week to avoid going to the front.
