Died in an ice avalanche – mourning Tyrolean (28) after an alpine tragedy in Pakistan

Date:

In Ehenbichl near Reutte in Tirol and surroundings there is great sadness. A popular 28-year-old from the Rieden district, who won the trail challenge in Lech am Arlberg in August, had his passion for the deadly mountains in Pakistan. News of the accident in the distant South Asian country spread like wildfire on Friday.

The young Ausserferner had left the Lechtal with his 25-year-old girlfriend for trekking and climbing trips in the South Asian country. On September 28, a day after the Tyrolean’s birthday, they left for the Shimshaltal and wanted to be back on October 4. However, the program was postponed due to weather conditions.

Traveling with a Pakistani guide
When the 28-year-old, according to Pakistani sources, left the base camp on Thursday of this week at about 4700 meters to a previously unclimbed peak, his girlfriend stayed behind at the base camp for health reasons. A Pakistani guide who had recently climbed K2, the world’s second highest mountain, traveled with the 28-year-old.

Ice avalanche released
The tragic accident happened at 10 a.m. (local time). For reasons still unclear, an ice avalanche erupted over the base camp, burying the Ehenbichler. Any help came too late for him. His Pakistani guide was seriously injured and was flown from base camp to a hospital.

The Austrian embassy in Islamabad is in contact with the authorities and the Pakistani army to organize the return transport. She is also in contact with the relatives in Austria and will support them in every step.
