Aid agency Doctors Without Borders reports on the dire conditions for the population in the war-torn country.
“Armed conflicts are increasing. And they last longer,” said Laura Leyser, director of Doctors Without Borders (ÄOG) in Austria, at a press conference in Vienna on Monday. “In addition, not only are more people fleeing the world, but the flight is also taking longer.”
ÄOG logistics Heinz Wegerer has just spent three months in Ukraine reporting on the “mental stress to which the population is subjected. There is no longer a safe place in all of Ukraine.” So far, 800 tons of relief supplies have been transported.
Many spent weeks in bunkers with no water, food or electricity, and air raid sirens every night.
On Monday, EU foreign ministers discussed Ukraine’s rapprochement with the EU in Brussels. President Zelenskyy hopes member states will approve the Commission’s proposal to grant Ukraine EU candidate status on Friday. Austria commits its consent to the EU sending similar signals to the countries of the Western Balkans. Foreign Minister Schallenberg: “We cannot afford geostrategic tunnel vision.”
On Monday, the government confirmed that a small number of Austrians are fighting in Ukraine. Russian sources spoke of five. Two are said to have been killed, one has left, two are still in Ukraine.
