It is a terribly sad story: a girl who fled the war in Ukraine suffocated in a gas accident in Vienna. Yeva was considered one of the greatest dance talents of Austria.
It wasn’t until April that she reached the semi-finals of the ORF show ‘The Big Chance’ and enchanted the audience on screen. The student, who quickly learned German, had escaped the horrors of war in her native Ukraine with her parents and hoped for a new, better future in Vienna. But last Sunday evening, fate struck mercilessly – and struck the family of war refugees with a terrible death drama.
Lying lifeless in the shower
Yeva wanted to take a quick shower. Because she did not leave the bathroom for a long time, her brother became worried. When he went to check on his 13-year-old sister, he recoiled in horror. The girl lay lifeless in the shower. Despite desperate attempts at resuscitation, alerted helpers were unable to revive the enthusiastic young dancer.
After investigation, suspicion immediately fell on the gas boiler in the apartment in the apartment building in Penzing. During measurements, the professional fire brigade found – as reported – significantly increased concentrations of carbon monoxide. The odorless gas is considered a slow death.
Every year 200 people die in gas accidents
The ongoing heat wave in particular can be life-threatening. Because high temperatures further increase the risk of CO accidents because the thermals come to a standstill. This creates a so-called “air stubble” – the result: a gas backlog that can penetrate the living space. According to the Road Safety Council, around 200 people in Austria suffer from carbon monoxide poisoning every year.
Faulty gas boilers or air conditioning systems operating at the same time as gas boilers are the most common causes.
