A young British woman (26) died when she was swept away by floodwaters in the Torrent de Pareis gorge. Her body was found and recovered on Wednesday.
A missing man (32) was finally found dead on Friday. It was the dead woman’s girlfriend who tried to save her from the water on Tuesday.
Spanish police said on Friday that search teams had found “the lifeless body of a young man”.
Since the heavy storm, there has been a feverish search for the man: emergency services tried to spot him from the air with a helicopter. A shocking discovery on Thursday evening: according to the authorities, the man’s pants and a shoe were floating in the river.
Ten people rescued by helicopter
According to official information, the couple was part of two groups of twelve hikers who were in distress during the storm. Ten men and women, including a German, were rescued by emergency services on Tuesday by helicopter. According to police reports, they were trapped by rising water. It was also said that they were “without warm clothing and completely soaked.”
3.3 kilometer long gorge
The 3.3 kilometre long gorge of the Torrent de Pareis is located in the Serra da Tramuntana mountain range. The walls rise steeply up to 200 metres. The crossing is considered one of the most spectacular treks in the Balearic Islands. But it is also demanding. Warnings are given not to underestimate the climb or descent over huge boulders.
