Ironically, on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s birthday, his main bridge on the Black Sea peninsula in Crimea was badly damaged. There were several explosions, according to the Russian authorities a large fire broke out on the railway bridge. A fuel truck was apparently on fire, according to photos and photos circulating in Russian and Ukrainian media on Saturday. The carriageway on the side of the road also suffered significant damage.
According to the authorities in Crimea, it is not clear exactly what happened. Traffic has stopped. The government in Simferopol announced that a ferry connection is under investigation. According to initial findings, there were no injuries or deaths.
After the Russian attack on Ukraine in late February, there were several explosions in Crimea that caused serious damage, including at military bases. There have also been repeated threats in the capital Kiev that Putin’s bridge between the peninsula and the Russian mainland will be shelled. Most recently, in the Kerch region, which borders directly on the bridge in Crimea, there have been repeated incidents of exploding drones.
Russia had strongly warned against shelling the bridge – an important strategic structure – and threatened to attack the command centers in Kiev if it did. The Ukrainian leadership had repeatedly requested long-range heavy weapons from the West. This should therefore destroy the bridge, as was said in Kiev.
