The will of Pope Francis, written in June 2022 and made public after his death, reflects his dedication to the Virgin Mary and his desire for a modest funeral in the papal basilica of Santa María la Mayor.
After the death of Pope Francis and the symbolic closure of his apartment in the Vatican, the spiritual will that he wrote on 29 June 2022 spread. In him, the Pope manifests his trust in eternal life and describes his will around the place of his grave.
The intimate Toond document includes his desire to be buried in the basilica of Santa María La Burgemeester, a sanctuary of special significance for him. Francisco went there to pray at the beginning and end of every apostolic journey, according to the text itself.
“I want my last earthly journey to end exactly in this old Marian sanctuary,” writes the Pope, pointing to the exact place: the niche between the Paulina chapel and the Sforza chapel. He also asks that his grave is on earth, simple and only register: Francis.
The will indicates that the costs of the funeral are covered by an amount donated by a beneficiary designated by him and managed by the extraordinary commissioner of the Liberian chapter, Monseigneur Rolandas Makrickas.
Francisco concludes the text that interrogates the suffering of his last essential stage for peace in the world and brotherhood among peoples. He also thanks those who loved him and prayed for him.
