A sexism scandal is currently shaking the Bundeswehr: Major-Major Hartmut Renk, formerly deputy commander of NATO-Ukraine command in Wiesbaden, loses its prestigious position. The reason for this is a disgusting explanation that is said to have fallen into a session – and for which it is now being held responsible …
In a conversation, the 62-year-old general apparently commented on the explanation that as a rape was inevitable, people have to relax and enjoy (“if rape is inevitable, relaxed and enjoying”). A shocked member of the British officer Corps reported this sexist comment. The Bundeswehr remained nothing but to initiate the disciplinary procedure.
From transport to retirement
Renk was originally supposed to be a lieutenant general in the fall and transferred to Norfolk in the US. But these plans are now being put on hold. Instead of promotion, the experienced officer now threatens the transfer to interim pension. He was previously responsible for the use of NATO command in Wiesbaden, which is responsible for the military support of Ukraine.
Renk himself confirmed that he actually made the controversial remark – but would probably mean “ironically”. But this apology is too late: NATO and the Bundeswehr have already drawn the consequences.
Internal matter in the Bundeswehr
Both the Bundeswehr and NATO have not yet officially confirmed the incident, which was originally reported by the “Spiegel” magazine. In the Klei barracks in Wiesbaden, the seat of the American headquarters for Europe and Africa, it is emphasized that this is a “purely German” and internal matter of the Bundeswehr.
