Wooden crosses and flowers – mass grave discovered in liberated city of Lyman

Date:

About 200 graves and a mass grave have been found in the city of Lyman in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, which was recently recaptured from Kiev. Pavlo Kyrylenko, head of Donetsk’s regional military administration, published photos with many small wooden crosses and officers in white hazmat suits. The excavations have already begun. Some of the victims were said to have died from heavy shelling during the Russian capture of the site in May.

The strategically important town, temporarily occupied by Russian troops, was recaptured by the Ukrainians in early October. According to preliminary findings, the dead could be Ukrainian soldiers or civilians.

How many bodies were in the mass grave has yet to be determined. Police said the dead included several small children and sometimes entire families.

Ukrainian media reported the discovery of dozens of graves in Lyman last Wednesday. The strategically important town was recaptured by the Ukrainians in early October (see video above).

Bucha as a symbol for war crimes
In the past, mass graves had been found in various parts of Ukraine after the withdrawal of Russian troops. The bodies found in Kiev’s Bucha suburb in early April sparked international outrage. Hundreds of dead civilians had been found there – some with signs of torture and their hands tied. Since then, Bucha has been considered a symbol of the most serious war crimes.
