A German (65) living in Tyrol discovered an alleged bargain on a German website in July. He ordered tons of wood pellets – but the delivery never arrived.
In July, according to police, the 65-year-old German had ordered several tons of wood pellets online “for a remarkably low price” via a supposedly reputable German company website.
Always procrastinate
And then the long wait began, the promised delivery never arrived despite repeated requests – not until today. The 65-year-old was always put off. But now there is no doubt that the man fell victim to brutal web criminals. The amount of damage amounts to several thousand euros.
Police prevention tips
The Tyrolean police know the tricks of the trade and advise, especially in times like these, to be more careful with alleged bargains. The following tips should be observed:
- Beware of offers that are too good and too cheap.
- Enter the web address of the homepage into an internet search engine and research “experiences” and “reviews” from other buyers.
- If possible, pay on account or only after receipt of the goods and do not make advance payments.
- Ensure adequate protection when transferring data, especially when transferring payment data. The abbreviation “https” before the entered address indicates that all data is encrypted and cannot be viewed or manipulated. This is especially important when entering sensitive information such as bank details etc.
