Dozens of people have been taken to hospital after the gas station exploded, causing a nearby block of flats to collapse.
At least seven people were killed and dozens injured yesterday after an explosion at a petrol station in the Irish town of Creeslough, in Donegal, in the country’s northwest, according to the latest report from Ireland’s National Police, the Garda. The events took place at 3:20 p.m., when a gas station was blown up, causing serious damage to a nearby apartment building and others, local newspaper ‘Irish Examiner’ reports.
In addition to the dead, dozens of people were taken to hospital, while emergency services went there to rescue the victims who could have been trapped under the rubble. Likewise, several specialized excavation teams and sniffer dogs went to the area to assist in the rescue.
“Rescue teams will continue to search all night for people who may have been buried under the rubble,” a Garda spokesman said. He also assured that the troops will continue to work on the ground and that they are unable to provide any information on the causes leading to this incident at this time.
Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin said his “thoughts and prayers” go out to the Creeslough community and the rescue teams who work there. For his part, the vice president of the government, Leo Varadkar, lamented the “terrible news”.
Letterkenny University Hospital, where the injured are being treated, has launched an emergency plan and advised other citizens not to go to the emergency department tonight. “First, check with your primary care physician or contact the NowDoc service — a nearby hospital —,” said a health center spokesperson.
Air traffic above the explosion site also had to be restricted to facilitate access for rescue helicopters during the night. The roads to that city were also closed off and police urged motorists to use alternative routes.
