Former Trump Adviser Steve Bannon Convicted of Contempt of Capitol Commission

Former Donald Trump adviser Steve Bannon was convicted Friday of two crimes of contempt of Congress. Bannon did not testify before the commission investigating the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 when subpoenaed, nor did he provide the necessary documentation.

It is a crime punishable by an economic fine of $1,000 (about EUR 980) and up to 12 months in prison. The jury deliberated for three hours before finding him guilty. The sentence can last between 60 and 90 days.

Aside from the conviction, the case is relevant because Bannon is the first close Trump aide to be found guilty as a result of a large-scale investigation into the Capitol Hill attack. Another former Trump adviser, Peter Navarro, was also charged with contempt after he defied a subpoena from the commission and is set to appear in court in November.

Bannon, Trump’s electoral architect and adviser to the far right in Europe, had no position in the White House as the events unfolded for which he was called to testify by the bipartisan commission investigating the January 6, 2020 uprising. few who knew what was going to happen before it happened.
