Bannon Convicted – Ex-Trump Adviser Guilty of Congressional Contempt

Date:

Renowned right-wing populist and former US presidential adviser Steve Bannon has been found guilty of contempt of Congress. A jury in Washington on Friday found the former chief strategist of former President Donald Trump guilty. The sentence for the 68-year-old will be announced at a later date. Bannon faces a jail term ranging from 30 days to a year. A fine is also possible.

The former Trump adviser had ignored a subpoena from the parliamentary inquiry into the January 6, 2021 storming of the Capitol. He also refused to hand over documents. Bannon’s attorney argued in vain in the trial, which began in federal court only Monday, that his client had not knowingly resisted the subpoena. Instead, the date of the study was “the subject of ongoing discussions.”

“Corrupt and very partisan”
The Commission of Inquiry is working on the events surrounding the storming of the seat of the US parliament. Trump attacked the body Friday in a post on his online network Truth Social as a “fake court” and accused it of being “corrupt and highly partisan”.

The U-Commission believes Bannon is a key witness. According to the panel, the right-wing populist spoke with Trump the day before the storm. In his own podcast at the time, Bannon also predicted that “hell will break out”. Radical Trump supporters then stormed Congress when Trump challenger Joe Biden’s election victory had to be officially confirmed.

Bannon was a central figure in Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. After his election victory, Bannon went on to become chief strategist at the White House. Trump fired him in August 2017.
