New position – Kiev sees “track to Russia” after explosion

Date:

A day after the explosion on the Crimean Bridge, it is still unclear who is responsible for the fire on the Russian-controlled peninsula. Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podoliak has now attracted attention with the theory that the killers can be found in the Russian military leadership. The background is errors between the Wagner mercenary group and the Ministry of Defense in Moscow.

As Russia announced, a truck exploded on the bridge – the damage to the strategically important structure connecting Russia to the annexed peninsula is enormous. “It is worth noting that, according to all the indications, the truck that exploded entered the bridge from the Russian side,” Podoliak told Ukrainian media outlet Ukrayinska Pravda. The answers to the question of who is responsible for the attack must be sought in Russia. “All of this clearly points to a trail to Russia,” Podoliak said.

Investigations in the place of residence of the Russian truck owner
The truck’s owner is said to be a resident of the southern Russian region of Krasnodar, Russia said. His identity was not released and an investigation was launched at his home. Among other things, the driving route of the car needs to be clarified.

Tensions with the domestic secret service and especially the Wagner mercenary group are said to be the reason for the attack: Videos on social media suggest that the group’s main propagandist, Alexey Slobodenyuk, may have been arrested. He had previously criticized Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and blamed him for the failures in Ukraine.

Cause of blast is ‘clear’ to presidential adviser
Destroying the bridge, an important personal project of Russian President Vladimir Putin, would also undermine the position of Russia’s domestic intelligence agency, the FSB, which was unable to prevent the attack. “The Department of Defense can now blame the FSB for the future loss of the South. Is it not clear who caused the explosion?” Podoljak wrote on Twitter.

Bridge partially open again
According to the Russian Ministry of Transport, the heavily damaged bridge was partially reopened on Saturday evening. However, it remained closed to trucks. To alleviate the still-limited traffic, authorities in Crimea want to rely on ferries and a land corridor running through occupied Ukrainian territory. There have been reports of long traffic jams on the access roads to the ferry terminals.
